Chapter 12

Sarah

Over the days, I followed with apprehension the weather in Massachusetts. Although it was summer in California too, the temperature here was pleasant, almost like a mild autumn, while my old state was being covered by snow. I would still try to board on Thursday morning, but I had my doubts if the plane would leave the airport or if the flight would be canceled.

With my mind busy searching for the new apartment, my worry about the weather, and running away from Matt in the office, Wednesday came. From the start of the day Matt was acting weird, staring at me more than he had to. Diana must have already realized what happened in his absence from the glances she makes between him and me, like a ping pong ball.

I left work and went straight to Alfredo’s where I was supposed to meet Spencer. When I arrived at the restaurant, he was already seated at one of the side tables. My stomach rumbled at the Italian food and I realized I was really hungry.

“Hello!”

“Hi! You look pretty today.”

“Thanks!” I said sitting at the table “I’m starving.”

“Well, girl with an appetite.”

The waiter approached with the menus and minutes later took our order. Spencer told me about his law career and how he was interning in an important firm. He told me about his family in North Carolina and what it's like to move so far away from home.

The point is, if I had met him two months ago, he would be “the person” for me. He was interesting, cool, but he came after Matt. Matt was the hurricane in my life that took everything, and all I could do was keep comparing them. My brain screamed things like "Not as pretty as Matt", "Matt would have let me talk more", and "By now I would be kissing Matt".

Alfredo’s was near the office, and consequently near my new home. After the delicious food, I invited Spencer to walk with me back to the apartment complex. He was a really nice guy.

“Well, it must be nice to live so close to work” he said pointing the Hunt tower.

“Yes, I can wake up and be there in 10, 15 minutes. My sleep is thanking this new chapter.”

“It’s not going to happen again, isn’t it?”

“What?”

“The kiss. We kissed that night and thought it might happen. We had a nice call that day, but it was the alcohol, wasn't it?”

“Spencer...”

“No, it’s okay. I needed to check if there's fire here or not.”

“I’m sorry, I'm in a weird moment with one person. You're a great guy but...”

“It’s okay, I’d rather not listen to this part. The rejection speech is pretty standard, I've heard it many times.”

“Spencer!”

“Go home, Sarah. It was a great date, the food was great.”

“Yeah” I smiled saying “You were a great company. Goodbye!”

I entered the lobby still watching Spencer standing on the sidewalk. Damn Matt, why did you mess me up for other people? If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have so many problems.
